Choosing an oxygen wellness device: a buyer's checklist

Anyone comparing oxygen-based wellness devices runs into the same difficulty: the products look similar, the words on the packaging are nearly identical, and the specifications are hard to compare. Four devices all say "oxygen" and all mean something different.

This guide is a checklist, not a recommendation. It sets out the questions worth asking before buying — about the technology, the running costs and the practical fit — so you can compare on the same terms rather than on marketing language.

First: which principle is the device actually built on?

This is the question that decides everything else, and it is the one most often skipped.

There are four common approaches, and they are not variations on a theme — they do genuinely different things. A concentrator raises the quantity of oxygen. An ozone generator produces a different molecule. Altitude and IHHT training work through temporary scarcity. The singlet principle changes the energy state of the oxygen that is already in the room.

A device built on one principle cannot be compared feature-by-feature with a device built on another. There is a separate post that sets the four side by side, and it is worth reading before any purchase decision.

If a product description does not make the underlying principle clear within the first paragraph, treat that as information in itself.

Is it a wellness device or a medical device?

These are two legal categories with different rules, different approval routes and different claims permitted.

Medical devices carry a conformity marking and a stated intended purpose. Where they are reimbursed, that happens on prescription.

Wellness devices are not approved for any medical purpose, and — in Germany at least — the Heilmittelwerbegesetz sets tight limits on what may be said about them.

Why this matters when comparing: if a supplier makes confident promises about specific conditions, that is not a sign of a better product. It is a sign that someone is either working outside the rules or selling in a market with different ones.

How much time does it actually cost you?

This is the practical question that decides whether a device fits your day — and the honest answer is rarely on the packaging.

Ask for the recommended session length and frequency. With the singlet principle, the air is breathed in through a nasal cannula while you sit; according to the manufacturer, a typical pattern is 30 to 60 minutes a day. Concentrator applications and IHHT also work in sessions, often longer or on a fixed protocol.

Ask what the device needs between sessions. Some units need a cooling period — the Forest Air Home, for instance, is specified to rest for an hour after an hour of use. That matters if several people in a household want to use it on the same evening.

Then be honest with yourself. A device you use for half an hour a day is worth more than one with better specifications that sits in a cupboard.

Six specifications worth comparing

Once you have settled the principle, these are the numbers that let you compare like with like:

  1. Room size. For which volume is the device designed? A device for 20 m² in a 60 m² room is a different proposition.

  2. Number of users at once. One outlet or two? For a practice this changes the utilisation maths considerably.

  3. Noise level in decibels. Decisive for a bedroom, irrelevant in a treatment room. Ask for the figure, not for the word "quiet".

  4. Power consumption. Multiply the wattage by your real duty cycle — at 45 minutes a day that is roughly 270 hours a year, not the manufacturer's example figure.

  5. Wear parts and their interval. What has to be replaced, how often, at what price? This is the single most common hidden cost.

  6. Warranty and service route. Who repairs it, where, and how long is the device gone?

Running costs — where the surprises live

The purchase price is the visible number. The one that decides the five-year cost usually is not.

Wear parts. Catalyst units, filters and lamps have service lives. Ask for the replacement interval and the price per part, and multiply it out. A cheaper device with an annual replacement can cost more over five years than a dearer one with a five-year part.

Electricity. Usually the smaller item at this duty cycle, but worth calculating rather than assuming — especially if several people use the device daily.

What is included. Delivery, instruction, accessories — or extra?

A fair question to any supplier: what does this device cost me in year three? An honest answer takes thirty seconds. A vague one is itself an answer.

Buy or rent first?

For a device you intend to use daily for years, trying it first is a reasonable step — particularly at this price level.

Renting is sensible when you are unsure whether you will keep the routine up, when you want to judge the noise level in your own home before committing, or when a practice wants to see how it fits into daily operations before buying.

Buying is sensible when the routine is already settled and the arithmetic favours it. Ask whether rental payments count towards a later purchase — that changes the calculation considerably.

Five questions to ask any supplier

Take these to any manufacturer, not only to us. The answers are more revealing than the brochures.

  1. On which principle does the device work, and what physically changes in the air?

  2. Is it a wellness device or a medical device, and what does that mean for what you may tell me?

  3. Which parts wear out, at what interval, and at what price?

  4. What does it consume, at the duty cycle you recommend?

  5. Can I try it before I decide, and do rental payments count towards a purchase?

A supplier who answers all five plainly is worth talking to. Where an answer becomes vague — that is where to look closer.

What this guide deliberately does not do

You may notice what is missing: any statement about what these devices do for a person.
